We can have an interactive conversation with a supercomputer that has God knows how many GPUs answering your question, that is really pretty amazing. - Jeff Frick
Keep in mind where it is today, and where it's going to be in the not too distant future. The output still seems pretty generic. It doesn't seem that fantastical today. I think it's going to be fantastical in the not too distant future. - Jeff Frick
It seems like we're always in the first inning. We like never get to the third inning and then suddenly there's something new that’s big and comes along. - Jeff Frick
I moved to the SF Bay area in 1985, and jumped into tech in 1997. The waves of innovation just keep coming, underpinned by increasingly powerful compute, storage, networking, and software innovation. The curves are exponential, the acceleration relentless.
I saw Ray Kurtzweil speak the other night, and on the question of democratization of computing power, he pointed out that everyone has a mobile phone in their pocket, even those with little else.
In 1976, the Cray-1 Super Computer, was arguably the most powerful computer on the planet and cost $36,000,000 in 2024 dollars ($8M in 1976).
Let's compare that to a $1,500 smartphone in your pocket today.
Cost
Cray-1 - $36,000,000 in 2024 dollars ($8M in 1976)
Modern Smart phone - $800 - $1,500
The phone cost 0.00004 of the Cray, or you can purchase 24,000 $1,500 phones for the price of 1 Cray.
Performance
Cray - 80 million floating-point operations per second
Modern Smart Phone - 500 BILLION floating point operations per second
More than 6,000 times more operations per second.
Size / Weight / Power
Cray - Room size, 11,000 lbs, 115 kW of power (including cooling)
Modern Smart Phone - pocket size, less than 10 oz, 5-10 watts
And today is the slowest day of technological progress for the rest of your life
The impact of exponential curves are hard to comprehend
Thanks again Sophie
